Legends and Lore for July
July, the seventh month of the current Gregorian calendar and the second month of Summer's rule, derives its name from Julius (Julius Caesar).
The traditional birthstone amulet of July is the ruby; and the larkspur and the water lily are the month's traditional flowers.
July is shared by the astrological signs of Cancer the Crab and Leo the Lion, and is sacred to the following Pagan deities: Apt (or Apet), Athena, Sothis, Spider Woman, and Rosea.
July 2
On this day in ancient times, the citizens of Rome celebrated the Feast of Expectant Mothers. At temples throughout the city, all pregnant women gathered to receive blessings and honor Bona Dea, Carmenta, Lucina, and other goddesses associated with birth and fertility.
July 3
The New Year of the Seminole Indian tribe of Florida begins on this date, and is celebrated with an annual Green Corn Dance honoring the new corn crop. In Italy, this day is sacred to the Witch of Gaeta; in Greece, the goddess Athena is honored.
July 4
U.S. Independence Day. On this day, the anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, the official "birth" of the United States is celebrated by Pagans and non-Pagans alike. On this day, many patriotic American Wiccans honor and give thanks to Lady Liberty, and perform magickal spells and rituals for the benefit of the country.
Day of Pax. On this day in ancient times, Pax (a Roman goddess of peace and harmony, identified with the Greek goddess Concordia) was honored with feasting and revelry.
Also on this day, the spirits of the mountains are honored by the Mescalero Apache Gahan Ceremonial, while the Great God who dwells within the fire of the Sun is paid homage to by the Ute Indian tribe of Utah and Colorado, who perform an annual Sun Dance. |

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
Individual steamed puddings with persimmon Anglaise
Ingredients
For the puddings
90g Butter
90g caster sugar
3 Eggs
90g self-raising flour
1 Orange, grated zest and juice
4 tbsp golden syrup
4 tsp persimmon purée
For the persimmon anglaise
250ml Milk
4 egg yolks
75g caster sugar
50ml persimmon purée
1 tbsp orange-flavoured liqueur
Method
1. Butter 4 small pudding basins
2. Cream the butter and sugar until light. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then the flour and the grated orange zest.
3. Add enough orange juice to produce a dropping consistency.
4. Put a spoonful of golden syrup in the bottom of each pudding basin.
5. Divide the pudding mixture between the basins and cover with foil.
6. Put in a steamer and steam for 40 minutes. .
7. To make the persimmon anglaise; heat the milk in a pan and bring to the boil. Remove from the heat.
8. Whisk together the egg yolks, sugar and persimmon purée.
9. Whisk in the hot milk and mix until well incorporated.
10. Pour the mixture into a clean pan and heat gently over a low heat until it begins to thicken. Be careful not to overheat as this will make the mixture curdle and scramble the eggs.
11. To test if the mixture is cooked, test with the back of a wooden spoon drawing a line through it, if it stands still it is ready.
12. Pour the mixture through a fine sieve into a bowl and allow to cool. Place in the fridge to become cold. Stir in the orange-flavoured liqueur.
13. Turn the puddings out and serve with the persimmon anglaise.
Serves 4.

After all, they told me to smoke,
they told me to have sex.
They told me to run away from
home and not come back.
They told me my brother was an alien
and my sister was Chinese.
Which in my mind is basically the same.
Anyway they told me that the penguins
would take over the world, and that
math class was a waste of time.
They told me that stepping out in
front of a moving truck was the
right thing to do. I believed them.
So now I'm dead because the voices
told me to drop out of school, to smoke
and drink alchohol, and to have sex
and get pregnant, and to run away from
everything I knew. Then they told me that
I was a mistake, and that killing myself helped
make the world a better place.
So now I'm standing in heaven and I see
families embracing with tears in their
eyes and warmth in their hearts.
I see smiles and people with faces of peace.
And St. Peter says, 'you are not allowed to enter,
only look. Because you made the wrong choices.
And you blamed it on the voices.'
I am thrown back to Earth, back into my
bed, where I was thinking this up.
And I realize that I am not going to
let that happen to me. Because the voices
in my head say that they are not in my head,
they are coming from you. You are the wrong
decision, the one who showed me the wrong way
to live. You took advantage of me. When I was weak.
But I'm not anymore.
And I'm not going to listen to you. So stop with
your sick game, I will not let you win.
Because the voices in my head tell me you are evil.
And I believe them. Because for once,
they are telling me the truth.
And for once, they are saving my life.

What we'd like to see is those of you who do things or make things, anything which can be made or cooked or grown or brew things at home without expensive gear.. Coming on board and lets get some Recipes, Hints & Tips, Patterns, Instructions and what ever as well.If you have them, some photos of what you are talking about (perhaps a series showing the stages from start to finish).
For some I know you are used to going it alone and here is a great way to mix, mingle and share on a practical level and for some who have been used to covens think of us here as one bloody large coven/family where we are all equal. Just by becoming involved you may be helping a number of people who are busting to try something. Some of you probably have questions on how to do something or you can't get something to work, well folks here is a jolly good chance to ask and perhaps get the answers you need. I bet there are heaps of stuff which could be done involving your kids and which is perfect for school holidays too. This is Pagans helping Pagans, something which is close to my lil ursine heart.
(Gets down off the beer keg and replaces it before the Publican realizes it was missing and toddles off to find useful thingies to do....)
